An introduction
I started to travel in my early twenties, liked it and just kept postponing ‘going home’. Somehow there was always more around the corner, that pull, that lure towards different countries, different cultures, different customs and that appetite for adventure. Dangers were neglected, discomforts were embraced and budgets were tight. I was in my twenties, it all was fascinating. That fascination has never left me. After spontaneously cycling the length of Africa (twice) and after one year of trekking across South America I concluded that this will always be part of my life.
Sure, life does not only have the shape of a straight line, and there have also been side trails. I hold qualifications as a teacher, a tour guide, a sports coach and hold a master’s degree in Psychological Coaching. That is the normal part. I also have 3 fantastic children, speak 5 different languages and lived one third of my life in the Netherlands, one third of my life in the Middle East and (so far) one third of my life in the UK. Throughout, the fascination of travelling never left me, it remains a passion that I simply want to share with other people.
For more than 30 years now I have been professionally active in the world of outdoor travel and adventure. I worked and work as a guide, a manager but also plan, recce and organise independently. Somehow I always wanted to leave a personal mark, so I created Theo Trails, a platform that would embody my vision and ambition of travelling.
I always find myself busy with exploring, researching and developing new ideas. I equally walk every single meter of every single trip. Nevertheless, I do not see myself as a one-man-band because nothing would be possible without the help and assistance of the local professionals and fellow enthusiasts in each country we visit. Finding a great local team has an absolute priority, I always work together with trusted, experienced and qualified local crews and agents. I believe in local knowledge and will always stay open to new ideas and suggestions. That is basically the framework of Theo Trails logistics; at home with modest yet adequate set up in combination with a strong local team backing us all the way, in preparation and whilst on tour. At every destination.
