Morocco – The Anti Atlas Trail –
The Anti‑Atlas is one of Morocco’s most fascinating and least‑visited mountain regions, about 4 hours drive from Marrakech only.
The Anti Atlas is a rugged, ancient chain full of Berber culture, dramatic geology, and quiet desert valleys. It’s a place where the Sahara meets the mountains, where pink granite, palm‑filled oases, and remote villages create a landscape unlike anywhere else in the country. The Anti‑Atlas is visually striking because it transitions between mountains and desert, meaning quieter trails and more immersive experiences. Ideal for solitude, warm local encounters and a still very traditional environment. Agriculture is based on olives, figs, barley, and almonds.
Highlights
A great drive over the High Atlas before we reached our remote and almost forgotten area. That is also its strength as villages are still very authentic and plenty of nomads still roam the area. The population in the Anti Atlas is actually decreasing; we encountered several villages totally abandoned and partly covered in a sea of wildflowers. Gebel Sirwa is the highest peak at 3,300m, most of us reached the top but it is not mandatory whilst on the trek. Flights in and out of Marrakech so again, comfortable accommodation in Marrakech and time to explore this amazing city.
Itinerary
8 days, camping in the mountains and comfortable Riads in Marrakech and/or Ouarzazate.
Trail history
May 2013 and June 2014, German groups in cooperation with Wuestenwanderer.de
Future trails
Nothing planned currently but we would like to visit the Anti Atlas again in the future. It is a great trek!
